Nearly two decades building, teaching, and advising owner-operated businesses. I write and speak about what it actually takes to build something sustainable, without burning yourself down in the process.
"Burnout doesn't need to happen. Legacy is possible without sacrificing yourself. I want to live in a world where entrepreneurs create because they are supported."Nicole Horger, Founder, Moreland Design and Moreland Legacy
I've been an entrepreneur, educator, strategist, and founder for nearly two decades. I scaled my first company from $16,000 to $300,000 in a year. I've also been hospitalized from burnout, rebuilt from nothing, and learned, the hard way, that the hustle-harder ethos isn't a growth strategy. It's a liability.
I teach entrepreneurship at Wayne State University's Ilitch School of Business. I advise Michigan small business owners through Moreland Design and Moreland Legacy. And I write and speak about the things nobody is saying clearly enough: about Straddle Season, about owner dependency, about what it actually looks like to build something you can step back from.
My frameworks come from the field, not the classroom. My clients are real businesses with real constraints. The thinking I share here is earned, not borrowed.
Survival Season has a purpose. The problem is when it becomes the default setting, when everything is urgent, nothing is documented, and the owner is the only system that works.
Read the field note →Straddle Season is the most dangerous and most overlooked phase in a business's life. You have something that works. You can see where you want to go. And everything you've relied on to get here is exactly what's blocking you from getting there.
Read the field note →In 2021 I ended up in the hospital with sepsis and viral pneumonia. I quit my job from that hospital bed. What followed was a year of recovery, and the clearest thinking I'd ever had about what sustainable entrepreneurship actually looks like.

Subscribe to the Newsletter →Every owner-operated business moves through four seasons, and most get stuck somewhere in the middle. The Four S's framework gives owners a map of where they are, why they're there, and what the path forward actually looks like.
Four circles. When all four are working together, you have an Owner with Options. When any one is missing, you have a dysfunction: The Dory, The Vortex, The Smolder, The Show. The framework names what's wrong before you spend money trying to fix the wrong thing.
Named for a reason. The Dory Effect is what happens when a business survives on momentum without awareness, getting by on what's working, never stopping long enough to look at what's underneath. It feels like progress. It isn't.
Not "exit." Not "scale." Options. The ability to step back, hand off, sell, or stay, on your terms, at your pace, without the business collapsing the moment you do. This is what all the work is building toward.
Not motivation. Not hacks. The honest, grounded truth about what it takes to build a business that doesn't require you to sacrifice yourself to run it.
Real field notes from inside owner-operated businesses, new frameworks as they develop, and the honest observations that are too long for LinkedIn. No fluff. No sales pitch. Just the thinking.
