I've been an entrepreneur, an educator, a strategist, and a founder. I've scaled a business from $16k to multiple 6-figures in under 18 months. I've also learned, the hard way: a business built on the owner's constant presence isn't really a business. It's a job you can't quit.
I teach entrepreneurship at Wayne State University's Ilitch School of Business. I advise Michigan small business owners through Moreland Design and Moreland Legacy. And I write and speak about the things nobody is saying clearly enough: about Straddle Season, about owner dependency, and what it actually looks like to build something you can step back from.
My frameworks come from the field, not the classroom. My clients are real businesses with real constraints. The thinking I share here is earned, not borrowed.

Survival Season has a purpose. The problem is when it becomes the default setting. When everything is urgent, nothing is documented, and the owner is the only system that works.
Straddle Season is the most dangerous phase in a business's life. You have something that works. You can see where you want to go. And everything you've relied on is exactly what's blocking you from getting there.
In 2021 I ended up in the hospital with sepsis and viral pneumonia. What followed was a year of recovery and the clearest thinking I'd ever had about what sustainable entrepreneurship actually looks like.

Every owner-operated business moves through four seasons of growth, and most get stuck somewhere in the middle. This framework gives owners a clear map of where they are, why they're there, and what the path forward actually requires of them.
Four interconnected layers of an owner-operated business. When all four are aligned, you have an owner with real options: to step back, sell, stay, or scale. When any one is broken, you have owner dependency. This framework names what's wrong before you spend money trying to fix the wrong thing.
Four fossil archetypes form during Survival Season and quietly drive owner dependency through every season that follows. Naming your fossil is the first intervention. Everything else builds from there.
At every seasonal transition is a threshold where the habits of the last season haunt the next one. Recognizing the Haunting Threshold is the difference between crossing it with intention or getting stuck for years. Most owners are in it right now and don't have a name for what they're feeling.
